History

The main farm house, stables and managers house of cresta two was purchased by Kenneth and Denise Williams in 1998.

The property consists of 250 acres of undulating Mornington peninsula countryside.

The main house was completely rebuilt, stables transformed, fences completely re-done and the main lake on the property extended.

The property was re-named Tarcoola Stud.

The name comes from the racehorse Tarcoola who won the 1893 Melbourne Cup.

He was owned/trained by Joseph Cripps and ridden by his 16 year old son Herbert Cripps.

Denise Williams is the great grand-daughter of Joseph, hence the Mornington peninsula version of Tarcoola.

Also the town Tarcoola at the end of the Ghan in South Australia was named in the horses’ honour.

Over the last 8 years Tarcoola has taken agistment, bought and raced it’s own horses and taken all breeding stock to sales where accepted.

The broodmare band has slowly increased to 20 mares.

The philosophy is to sell all bred stock to maximize broodmare value.

Race horses are normally purchased at sales.

Data on Tarcoola Racehorse Performance (bought) and Tarcoola Racehorse Performance (bred and sold) is contained under appropriate sub headings.

While the breeding program is in its infancy nearly all horses sold have been successful and majority are still racing.

Our breeding philosophy centres on thoroughbred genetics (DNA).

This helps us determine whether our mares are inbreed/outbreed or neither. From this information we can use various philosophies, for examples x-factor/inbreeding or alternately out crossing if the mare is found to be too inbred. These ideas are taken together with conformation characteristics to determine what will be produced.
